Resource Conservation Commission June 15, 2020

This commissions meets monthly, but had been on hiatus due to the pandemic. We plan to meet monthly going forward.

This commission is absolutely fantastic and I'm thrilled to be the alder member. Fitchburg's commitment to recycling, environmental sustainability, and addressing climate change is extraordinary. It's one of the things that sets Fitchburg apart from other municipalities in Dane County. The work of this committee over the years is one of the reasons this is true.

Action items for you!

  • SAVE THE DATE! Drive-through Recycling Day Event on Saturday, July 18 from 8-11am

    • Interested in volunteering? We need help. Email me.

  • SIGN UP FOR GREEN FITCHBURG UPDATES, including monthly e-newsletter. Read the last issue here.

  • READ JUNE RCC FITCHBURG STAR ARTICLE "Boost the pollinator population and help save our food supply"

  • CHECK OUT THE 2020 RECYCLING GUIDE, now also in Spanish!

  • FUN FACT! You have unlimited curbside recycling for cardboard! We're seeing an uptick in cardboard, likely due to more shipping because of the pandemic. You don't need to bring it to the recycling drop off (and we're running out of room)

    • Curbside Cardboard Collection guidelines, from the 2020 Recycling Guide:  If you have more boxes than will fit in your cart and you cannot wait until your next collection, please cut down cardboard boxes place them in clear, plastic bags (up to 32- gallon and no more than 50 pounds) and place the bags next to your recycling cart. Please do not bundle or place in a bigger box

Meeting Highlights

  • We reviewed CIP projects that were relevant to the committee, including storm water and sustainability projects.

  • We discussed how to do community outreach during the pandemic. We'll discuss in more depth next meeting.

  • Staff collected water and sediment depth information from ponds throughout the City. This information will be used to prioritize which ponds need to be dredged and on what time frame. Staff plan to collect sediment depth information every five years.

  • Exciting solar energy news! The O’Brien solar array is coming to Fitchburg, and we just found out we will double our energy take from 250kW up to 500kW, due to another participant decreasing their requested share of the project
