Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) Meeting Recap
This was a special finance committee meeting where city department heads presented on projects proposed for the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). All the alders were invited to attend and learn, and most attended.
What is the CIP?
The CIP is a document that lays out a 10 year plan for the major capital projects that will be undertaken by the city, which helps with long term budget planning. By capital, we mean physical building, vehicles, road repairs, equipment and the like, which are significant expenses to the city. It does not represent everything encompassed by the city budget. The projects in the first 5 years of the document are more solid, the last five years are more theoretical.
What is the timeline?
The document has been complied by the city staff and mayor, and is now in a review process. The alders will submit amendments by July 21, followed by a public hearing, debate on amendments, and adoption of the CIP in mid-August. See the full schedule.
What should you do?
The document is long, but I recommend you open it and skim it.
Start on page 45 and you'll see the beginning of a series of proposed projects. As you page through, you may notice projects that affect your area of town.
Send feedback (good or bad) on any projects that matter to you. If something needs to be changed, I can propose an amendment to be discussed. Email me with feedback
Then attend the public hearings on June 23 (tomorrow!) and August 11. **Please note that amendments have to be submitted BEFORE July 21, and we cannot propose amendments at the meeting. So if you want to see changes, you'll need to talk to me in advance.
